How to Answer How Much Do You Want
How to Answer How Much Do You Want How to Answer How Much Do You Want How to Answer How Much Do You Want?By Martin Yate, CPC, careercast.comAsk for too much and you might not get an offer ask for too little and you could be kicking yourself for years. Under-negotiating your salary today has an impact on your lifetime earnings, because all future raises will be based on a lower starting point.Fortunately, the correct answer can be found with a little research and a simple negotiation strategyJust as every job you interview for has an approved salary sortiment, you should never go to a job interview without your own predetermined range. When you answer, How much money do you want? with a range rather than a single figure, you avoid nailing yourself down to a specific dollar figure that you might regret. At the same time, you dramatically increase the odds of the two salary ranges intersecting, andposition yourself with room to negotiate. How to Determine Your Salary RangeYou can quickly determine a reasonable salary rangefor yourself in three simple stepsStep One.Given your experience, determine the least you would need to put food on your table and a roof over your head.Step Two.Determine what would constitute a fair offer for a suitable job with a stable company. Then compare and contrast what third-party research says your skills are worth Google salary calculator and salary report and include terms like your job title, profession, job location, and/or industry in separate searches with your chosen salary calculator.Step Three.Given the same considerations of a suitable job with a stable company, come up with the offer that would make you smile, drop dead, and go to heaven. At the end of this process, youve got three salary numbers a minimum, a midpoint, and a dream salary. Now kick out the lowest number, because its always easier to negotiate downwards. This leaves you with a salary rangeyour midpoint to your high pointthat you can give with confidence, I am lo oking for somewhere between . . . Now you have a sensible salary range, just like every job you apply for.NegotiationsThe hiring manager wants you but doesnt have you this is probably the only time in your relationship with a new employer when you have even a slim negotiating edge, so use it.Your primary goal is to get the interviewer to put a dollar figure on the table, so in response to, How much do you want? you begin with, If Im qualified for the job, which I believe I am because of A, B, C, D . . . and briefly restate the responsibilities of the job and your matching skills, experiences, and achievements, building into your explanation what you know about the role of the job within the department. Your goal is to demonstrate a thorough grasp of the job, and your answer ends with, So given these matching skills and requirements, Im sure youll make me a fair offer. By the way, what is the salary range for this position? If any part of that range intersects with your range, you rep ly, Excellent We certainly have something to talk about because I was looking for between $x and $y. obviously Id like $y. How close do you think we can get? or Thats certainly something we can talk about. Im looking for between $x and $y. How much flexibility is there?Of course, the interviewer might decline to tell you and instead ask again how much you want. Your next step is to offer your predetermined salary range from your midpoint to your high point. Remember, offering a range means you wont run the danger of asking for too much, or accept too little, too soon. The first offer that is put on the table is usually fairly close to any final offer, and you cannot sour negotiations by repeatedly pushing the money issue. Nevertheless, with an offer on the table, the hiring manager has made the decision that s/he can hire you, and everyone else involved wants to be done with this project, so you can negotiate in good faith and expect good faith in return. How Important Is Money? When y ou are climbing the ladder towards your long-term goals, sometimes you have to make strategic career moves that have little salary benefit but which support long-term career-management strategy. Money is important, but your career trajectory is more important. New jobs are pivotal points in your life that affect your whole life going forward. They shouldnt represent decisions made purely on the basis of salary.Reprinted with permission from careercast.com, 2016 Adicio, all rights reserved.

Alternative titles for this section include professional experience, work experience, and relevant experience. The experience section should be written listing your most recent employer first. Experience section resume exampleWhat Computer Skills Should You Include on Your Resume? There are three easy-to-follow steps to figure out what computer skills you should include on your resume. The computer skills you include depend on both your background and the types of positions you are applying to. Step 1 Create a master list of your computer skillsGo through each category and create a master list of each and every computer skill you have in your toolbox. When creating your master list, write every skill, no matter how obvious it may seem. Although some computer skills might seem obvious given your profession, many hiring managers still want to see these skills listed. The important thing is to never write a computer skill that you arent comfortable with. If you include it, hiring managers will expect you can deliver. If you are ever worried about a hiring manager over or underestimating your level of proficiency, a dd fundamental, basic, intermediate, or advanced in parentheses next to the skill listed.Job post example (with highlighted skills)Step 2 Figure out the computer skills required for the jobWhen applying for a new position, you must first identify the computer skills needed. To figure this out, go through each job description and highlight each thing that relates to a technology, software, or application. Then create a list with the computer skills described, making sure to write each skill using the same wording that is used in the job description. For example, if you are applying for a landscaping position, there is no need to include that you know computer programming. 50+ Computer Skills Hiring Managers Want In ResumesTo make sure your resume has the computer skills hiring managers look for, go through this list to check out the top computer skills needed for each type of category and position.Basic Computer Skills TypingWord ProcessingElectronic File ManagementEmailingInternet ResearchPresentationsGraphic EditingSpreadsheetsMS WordMS OutlookMS PowerPointMS ExcelHardwareCablingServersScreen RepairHardware TroubleshootingNetworkingA/V SetupSoftwareSoftware DevelopmentFull-Stack DevelopmentWeb DevelopmentJavaJavaScriptHTMLCSS.NETAgile DevelopmentPythonCOBOLC++Graphic Design Word ProcessingGraphic ManipulationDocument FormattingAdobe PhotoshopAdobe IllustratorAdobe InDesignCorelDRAWMicrosoft PublisherAutoCADArt DesignSpreadsheets DatabasesMS ExcelData AnalyticsMATLABSAP BIExcel MacrosVLOOKUPStatisticsRelational DatabasesPivot TablesIT S upportClient Server ManagementTroubleshootingTech DiagnosticsNetwork Support Systems AdministrationPassword ResetsabsatzwirtschaftDigital MarketingSocial Media MarketingPay-Per-Click AdvertisingGraphic DesignUI/UX DesignMailChimpGoogle AnalyticsFacebook AdsWordPressHow To Learn New Computer SkillsAre you worried about not having the computer skills needed for a position? How Being Yourself Can Help Your Career - The Muse
How Being Yourself Can Help Your Career - The MuseHow Being Yourself Can Help Your CareerThere are certain things youre supposed to do as part of the job search. The tailored resume is bound to get you much further than a generic one. And if your cover letter expresses enthusiasm for the job youre applying to, its more likely to get the attention of the hiring manager- more than say one that could work for any job in any old engineering department. But what if you could do more to grab someones attention? What if you could speed that process up by being honest about who you are? Read on to learn how eight professionals braved being themselves to advance their career.1. Going Off-ScriptI mentioned I was an innovative thinker and the interviewer asked me to explain. Instead of giving an answer by the book, I let her know that I had an example that was a bit weird. Go on, she prodded. I then recounted a story when I lost a Frisbee in the middle of a duck-filled lake. After trying fruitl essly to reach it with a stick, I gathered bread and threw it in a direction that led the ducks to naturally push the disc closer and closer. Within a few minutes, the Frisbee was mine and the lake ducks were well-fed. It mayve been a good story to showcase my resourcefulness too, but at any rate, it was memorable and I got the gig.Dan, Account Executive2. Being Multi-DimensionalSo I have a black belt in Taekwondo, which I used to leave at the bottom of my resume, under skills. It was the last thing that I threw on there just to add something different and not entirely engineering related. On two separate occasions, it ended up being the main talking point for interviews. For my first internship in college, and my first full-time job out of college, my interviewer also had a black belt- in Taekwondo. Im not saying that its the reason I got the job, but it 100% helped me hit it off with my interviewers. I think having something quirky on my resume definitely helped me have much bette r interviews. Jimmy, Data Scientist3. Demonstrating PassionWhen I first came out, everyone in my family told me not to bring it up at work because (in most cases) I would get discriminated against. But during an interview, I was asked what I was passionate about and my response was the activism I was doing for the LGBT community. I went on to tell him about the work I was doing and how it was impacting LGBT homeless youth, giving more people the courage to come out and creating more tresor (LGBT friendly) spaces. The guy interviewing me proceeded to come out to me and tell me how this company was super LGBT-friendly and they even had a committee for employees to do LGBT activism He was also the hiring manager and offered me the position on the spot Ariana,Account Executive4. Being UnafraidBack in 2008, hardly any guys watched The Bachelor (not sure thats changed too much). I loved it, and started a Bachelor pool at our company. Only a few people signed up and most people mocked me d uring the course of the season, especially when they could hear me talking about the previous episode on Tuesday morning with my fellow pool members. Then on the Friday before the last episode of the season, our CEO, who Id never officially met with, called me into his office. Scared out of my mind that I was being called into his office on a Friday afternoon, he immediately put my fears to ease by saying, Who do you think will get the final rose? He apparently was also a fan and not only wanted to talk about the season, but felt that as a company we should do a promotion around the finale. Finally, he asked me to lead the project. I wouldve never gotten that face-time or opportunity if I hadnt been so open about loving such a terrible, trashy show.Elliott, Senior Director, Brand + Marketing5. Coming CleanI had a sales manager ask me If you had all the money in the world, what would you do? I originally responded with a professional answer, of I would probably still have a job and w ork somewhere. He didnt buy it and asked if that was really how I felt- clearly I hadnt done a great job convincing him. Then I said, no, I would probably be a Real Housewife or be on a reality TV show. He thought that was a great answer and really showed my personality, and I ended up getting the jobYanina, Account Executive6. Forcing a LaughIn my final interview for The Muse I was asked if I could have any super power what would it be. For as long as I can remember I have wanted the power to pee out of my finger tips, and this was the only answer I could think of so I just blurted it out. Thankfully it got a laugh and I ended up with a job offer a few hours laterNealy, Sales Development Representative7. Displaying OriginalityIn college I was interviewing for a position in the entertainment PR field that was pretty competitive. After making it to the second round of interviews, I was offered the job and accepted it. I later found out that the manager had had the current employees l ook up the potential new hires on Facebook to binnensee if there was anything incriminating or interesting on there that would sway his decisions. Although mine was set to private, he was able to see my cover photo (which is a collage of Kim Kardashian crying), and he apparently thought it was funny enough to seal the deal. Jimmy, Content Associate8. Getting it Just RightWhen I was looking for a new job, I was reading articles about how to stand out in the job application process. I found this great company that filled its team page with funny videos of each employee. I decided if I made one, the company would have to interview me. I sat in my apartment all day filming myself on my cell phone. I must have had over 100 takes to get it just right- including the part when I tried to beatbox like the CEO did in his. Long story short, I sent it directly to the CEO, got an interview, and although the job didnt pan out, it taught me being unique really does get you noticed. I took the sam e mindset to get my job here at The Muse.Dara, Team Lead Sales EastThe next time you find yourself deciding between the textbook answer and the response or behavior that more accurately displays the real you, consider the latter. It could be powerful enough to give you the edge you need to succeed in this competitive world.Photo of woman working on floor courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

6 networking mistakes you dont know youre making
6 networking mistakes you dont know youre making6 networking mistakes you dont know youre makingThe worst kind of mistakes are the ones you dont learn from - lets avoid those when it comes to networking.Your professional network does a lot mora than submit your resume. A good network is there to provide support, feedback, and advice for shaping your career. The meaningful relationships you build help you navigate uncomfortable job situations, negotiate the right job offers, and gain access to other smart and interesting professionals in your field. Here are a few networking mistakes you may be making and tips on how to improve.1. Youre waiting to build your network until you need itThe biggest mistake in networking is notlage starting early enough. Many people wait to build a network until theyre looking for a new job, exploring a career change, or have a specific professional need. You may find someone willing to pass on your resume or provide a bit of advice on short notice. But t hese relationships will generally be short-lived since theyre based on one specific need instead of shared values, goals, and interests.A powerful network is made up of people that help support and connect each other. These relationships should start long before you need something. Start early, be proactive, and make networking part of your daily routine. Not sure where to start? Use a networking app such as Shapr to connect with professionals in your area who share common interests. Look on LinkedIn for people with interesting jobs who went to the same college as you. Volunteer for a charity that excites you and ask some of the other volunteers to lunch.2. Youre asking too much or too littleEvery coffee should end with one specific ask - but without asking for too much at once.Instead of Can you connect me with NAME?Ask Thanks for providing your valuable insight on this topic. Would you be open to connecting me with one other person who can provide an additional perspective on what weve discussed?Instead of Can you submit my resume for that job?Ask Thanks for sharing your insight into my career trajectory. Im interested in one of the roles I saw posted on the job board. Do you have any additional ideas for the best way to get prepared if I am invited to interview when I submit my application?By keeping your request small and specific, you leave a window of opportunity for your contact to help out in a larger way without demanding or expecting too much from someone youve just met.3. Youre avoiding people who share your job titleWhile mentors are great, some of the best ideas come from talking with other professionals in your field who share the same daily obstacles as you do.Be open to meeting other people at the same place in their careers, and discuss the challenges you face. It will feel good to get ideas from someone trying to tackle similar assignments, and you may even find a regular happy hour friend for celebrating professional wins and getting through hard weeks.4. Youre not prepared for a conversationWhen you meet up with someone new, you should have already done your homework. You dont have to memorize someones resume, but you should glance over their LinkedIn profile and know a little about that persons background.Do a quick Google search to see what comes up. You may discover that the person youre meeting runs a blog on the side about a hobby that also interests you. The more common ground you discover, the more topics you will have to break the ice and help the conversation flow.5. Your follow up is about youIf your thank you email after meeting someone new just says, Thank you for your time, youre doing it wrong. While this email is polite and courteous, see how you can further the relationship by adding value for the recipient.Did you mention an article in the context of your conversation? Find the link and pass it along. Did this person mention he or she was looking for a good place to eat in a specific neighborhood? Mak e a recommendation. By making the email about the recipient, you build the foundation for a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship. Pro tip we have all the networking lingo already spelled out for you, and you can download it for free.6. You havent kept in touch with your existing networkWhile you should place an emphasis on continually meeting new people and expanding your network, you should also not forget the people who already provided advice, support, and funny insight along the way.An easy way to connect with your existing network is through social media. Get a Twitter or LinkedIn account and engage with the content your contacts post. Comment on thoughtful articles they share, and follow up with a quick email to pass along related articles you spot.Want to win extra brownie points with your network? Host a brunch or happy hour and invite a few people to join who you havent seen in months. Your contacts will remember your generosity in connecting them to new people, and will think of you the next time a great opportunity comes their way.Mandy Menaker is the Head of PR and Brand Development at Shapr, a networking app for meeting inspiring professionals near you.
