Under-negotiating your salary today has an impact on your lifetime earnings, because all future raises will be based on a lower starting point.Fortunately, the correct answer can be found with a little research and a simple negotiation strategyJust as every job you interview for has an approved salary sortiment, you should never go to a job interview without your own predetermined range. When you answer, How much money do you want? with a range rather than a single figure, you avoid nailing yourself down to a specific dollar figure that you might regret. At the same time, you dramatically increase the odds of the two salary ranges intersecting, andposition yourself with room to negotiate.How to Determine Your Salary RangeYou can quickly determine a reasonable salary rangefor yourself in three simple stepsStep One.Given your experience, determine the least you would need to put food on your table and a roof over your head.Step Two.Determine what would constitute a fair offer for a suitable job with a stable company. Then compare and contrast what third-party research says your skills are worth Google salary calculator and salary report and include terms like your job title, profession, job location, and/or industry in separate searches with your chosen salary calculator.Step Three.Given the same considerations of a suitable job with a stable company, come up with the offer that would make you smile, drop dead, and go to heaven. Your goal is to demonstrate a thorough grasp of the job, and your answer ends with, So given these matching skills and requirements, Im sure youll make me a fair offer. By the way, what is the salary range for this position?If any part of that range intersects with your range, you rep ly, Excellent We certainly have something to talk about because I was looking for between $x and $y. obviously Id like $y. How close do you think we can get? or Thats certainly something we can talk about. Im looking for between $x and $y. How much flexibility is there?Of course, the interviewer might decline to tell you and instead ask again how much you want. Your next step is to offer your predetermined salary range from your midpoint to your high point. Remember, offering a range means you wont run the danger of asking for too much, or accept too little, too soon.The first offer that is put on the table is usually fairly close to any final offer, and you cannot sour negotiations by repeatedly pushing the money issue. And if your cover letter expresses enthusiasm for the job youre applying to, its more likely to get the attention of the hiring manager- more than say one that could work for any job in any old engineering department. But what if you could do more to grab someones attention? What if you could speed that process up by being honest about who you are? Read on to learn how eight professionals braved being themselves to advance their career.1. Going Off-ScriptI mentioned I was an innovative thinker and the interviewer asked me to explain. Instead of giving an answer by the book, I let her know that I had an example that was a bit weird. Go on, she prodded. I then recounted a story when I lost a Frisbee in the middle of a duck-filled lake. After trying fruitl essly to reach it with a stick, I gathered bread and threw it in a direction that led the ducks to naturally push the disc closer and closer. Within a few minutes, the Frisbee was mine and the lake ducks were well-fed. It mayve been a good story to showcase my resourcefulness too, but at any rate, it was memorable and I got the gig.Dan, Account Executive2. Being Multi-DimensionalSo I have a black belt in Taekwondo, which I used to leave at the bottom of my resume, under skills. It was the last thing that I threw on there just to add something different and not entirely engineering related. On two separate occasions, it ended up being the main talking point for interviews. For my first internship in college, and my first full-time job out of college, my interviewer also had a black belt- in Taekwondo. Im not saying that its the reason I got the job, but it 100% helped me hit it off with my interviewers. I think having something quirky on my resume definitely helped me have much bette r interviews. Jimmy, Data Scientist3. Demonstrating PassionWhen I first came out, everyone in my family told me not to bring it up at work because (in most cases) I would get discriminated against. But during an interview, I was asked what I was passionate about and my response was the activism I was doing for the LGBT community. I went on to tell him about the work I was doing and how it was impacting LGBT homeless youth, giving more people the courage to come out and creating more tresor (LGBT friendly) spaces. The guy interviewing me proceeded to come out to me and tell me how this company was super LGBT-friendly and they even had a committee for employees to do LGBT activism He was also the hiring manager and offered me the position on the spot Ariana,Account Executive4. Being UnafraidBack in 2008, hardly any guys watched The Bachelor (not sure thats changed too much). I loved it, and started a Bachelor pool at our company. Only a few people signed up and most people mocked me d uring the course of the season, especially when they could hear me talking about the previous episode on Tuesday morning with my fellow pool members. Then on the Friday before the last episode of the season, our CEO, who Id never officially met with, called me into his office. Scared out of my mind that I was being called into his office on a Friday afternoon, he immediately put my fears to ease by saying, Who do you think will get the final rose? He apparently was also a fan and not only wanted to talk about the season, but felt that as a company we should do a promotion around the finale. Finally, he asked me to lead the project. I wouldve never gotten that face-time or opportunity if I hadnt been so open about loving such a terrible, trashy show.Elliott, Senior Director, Brand + Marketing5. Coming CleanI had a sales manager ask me If you had all the money in the world, what would you do? I originally responded with a professional answer, of I would probably still have a job and w ork somewhere. He didnt buy it and asked if that was really how I felt- clearly I hadnt done a great job convincing him. Then I said, no, I would probably be a Real Housewife or be on a reality TV show. He thought that was a great answer and really showed my personality, and I ended up getting the jobYanina, Account Executive6. Forcing a LaughIn my final interview for The Muse I was asked if I could have any super power what would it be. For as long as I can remember I have wanted the power to pee out of my finger tips, and this was the only answer I could think of so I just blurted it out. Thankfully it got a laugh and I ended up with a job offer a few hours laterNealy, Sales Development Representative7. Displaying OriginalityIn college I was interviewing for a position in the entertainment PR field that was pretty competitive. After making it to the second round of interviews, I was offered the job and accepted it. I later found out that the manager had had the current employees l ook up the potential new hires on Facebook to binnensee if there was anything incriminating or interesting on there that would sway his decisions. Although mine was set to private, he was able to see my cover photo (which is a collage of Kim Kardashian crying), and he apparently thought it was funny enough to seal the deal. Jimmy, Content Associate8. Getting it Just RightWhen I was looking for a new job, I was reading articles about how to stand out in the job application process. I found this great company that filled its team page with funny videos of each employee. I decided if I made one, the company would have to interview me. I sat in my apartment all day filming myself on my cell phone. I must have had over 100 takes to get it just right- including the part when I tried to beatbox like the CEO did in his. Long story short, I sent it directly to the CEO, got an interview, and although the job didnt pan out, it taught me being unique really does get you noticed. Company culture isnt what you do, its how you do itCompany culture isnt what you do, its how you do itI have an issue with company culture discussions.The popular definition of company culture is how many ping-pong tables you have, how many beer garden outings you take as a team, how comfortable the chairs are in the entryway, whether you get 10 days of paid vacation time or 15 days of paid vacation time, how good your 401k plan is, how many weird fun facts you know about your employees, etc. etc. etc.A perfect example of this is the tech start-up worldCompany culture, as it is formally defined, is immediately followed up with descriptions of the office, how much time you get off for lunch, the fact that you can write on the walls in Crayola marker because its more creative. And to a lot of people, these environments seem like dreams.They are the David of the working world, slinging rocks at corporate Goliath.But Ill say for me, the above has leidhing to do with how I define company culture.For me, company culture comes down to one thing and one thing onlyHow you treat what it is youre doing for eight plus hours a day, five (sometimes six or seven) days a week.If I dont feel good about how the work gets done, if Im not enjoying the process with my team, then no amount of rock climbing expeditions or expensed dinners or Friday margaritas are going to change that.Sure, they might give me a fleeting sense of fun, but that does very little to impact the way the work (the thing we spend far more time doing) gets done.Company culture has to do with the people, not the things you have your people doing - or the amenities you provide your people to leisure themselves.Having said that, let me tell you my definition of company cultureCulture is how people handle a disagreement.Culture is how teams communicate, the language they use, the way they share their ideas and feedback.Culture is whether or not people talk badly about others behind their backs.Culture is the meti culousness that goes into even the most mind numbing of tasks.Culture is whether your title defines your role, or your role defines your title.Culture is everyones willingness to listen.Culture is showing up on time, prepared, with a positive attitude.Culture is the way you approach your work, day in and day out, with an insatiable hunger to learn and grow and build.Thats company culture, and thats whats actually fun.Getting stuff done, is fun.Getting it done really well, is fun.Getting it done with people you enjoy being around, is fun.And feeling really good about your work, is fun.Everything else is secondary.This article originally appeared on Inc Magazine.
